BNI Strengthens Environmental Commitment on International Environment Day 2025

PT Bank Negara Indonesia (Persero) Tbk or BNI affirms its commitment to supporting environmental preservation in commemoration of International Environment Day which falls on June 5, 2025.

This year, the commemoration carries the global theme “Ending Plastic Pollution” as a reminder that the plastic waste crisis is not only a global issue, but also a shared responsibility, including us at BNI. This theme is an important momentum to strengthen collective efforts in fighting the increasingly worrying plastic pollution.

In the Global Risks Report 2025 released by the World Economic Forum, environmental risks are ranked as the top global threat in the next 10 years. Pollution, extreme weather events, and ecosystem damage are cited as the main risks, indicating the need for an active role by various sectors, including the financial industry, in promoting sustainable solutions. BNI views the importance of banking's contribution in bridging economic growth and environmental preservation.

BNI Corporate Secretary Okki Rushartomo stated that BNI consistently implements sustainable business strategies through the Social and Environmental Responsibility (TJSL) program. One of the leading initiatives is BNI GoGreen, part of BNI Berbagi, which focuses on six pillars, including Green Carbon Ecosystem (forest reforestation), Blue Carbon Ecosystem (marine reforestation in coastal areas), Endangered Species Conservation, Waste Management, Renewable Energy, and Water Stewardship.

For the past three years, BNI has also been active in environmental conservation projects, such as reforestation of critical land in Megamendung and Cijeruk, Bogor Regency, and rehabilitation of mangrove ecosystems in Teluk Pangpang, Banyuwangi and Lembung, Pamekasan. These projects not only improve soil quality and increase biodiversity, but also support the economic welfare of local communities.

In addition, BNI runs a community-based waste management program through Pos Pandai in Bogor City. This program combines technological approaches, financial literacy, and community empowerment to create a sustainable waste management system. Inorganic waste is sorted by type, including plastic, metal, paper, and glass. The separated waste is then managed as an asset of economic value.

Within the company itself, BNI has also initiated sustainable waste management steps by implementing the Zero Waste to Landfill principle. This program is implemented through the 3R approach (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle), including by encouraging employees to sort waste according to its category to support a circular economy and stop the use of single-use plastic bottled drinking water (AMDK) in the work environment. This step is proof that real change can start from within the company.

Okki further said that the commemoration of International Environment Day is a reminder that environmental protection is not just a moral obligation, but also a long-term, future-oriented business strategy.

"We believe that environmental protection and economic growth can go hand in hand. It is time for all parties to move together for a healthier and more sustainable earth," Okki concluded.
