BNI and Shopee Open Export Roads for 10,000 Indonesian SMEs

Jakarta, 2 November 2021 -- PT Bank Negara Indonesia (Persero) Tbk or BNI cooperates with Shopee, a leading e-commerce company in Indonesia, to pave the way for small and medium enterprises (SMEs) to make it easier for them to export their products to various countries. The Shopee – BNI Export Program allows the opening of market access to Singapore, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam, up to Brazil, for around 10,000 SMEs registered in this program.

The cooperation between the two parties will provide 3 benefits for SMEs selected to join the program, namely increasing the visibility of selected SME export products on the Shopee marketplace, in Southeast Asia, especially Taiwan. In addition, selected SMEs will receive training and education to be able to develop on the digital platform that will be provided by Shopee. Lastly, selected SMEs will also be registered in the Shopee Export Program which will open their stores in the Shopee application which can be viewed and accessed by Shopee users in various other countries in the world.

“As a Bank from Indonesia that has many overseas branch offices, BNI sees that currently SMEs have export opportunities to various countries, ranging from the Brazilian market, Singapore, Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam, to Taiwan. Buyers from these countries can order Indonesian SME products that are registered in the program we created with Shopee," said BNI’s MSME Business Director, Muhammad Iqbal.

The Shopee Indonesia Executive Director, Christin Djuarto, explained Shopee's mission in building competitive Indonesian MSMEs. "We are very pleased with the collaboration with BNI, which is in line with the #ShopeeAdaUntukUMKM mission. Through the Shopee Export Program, we have helped more than 180,000 local MSMEs to be able to export until the middle of this year. Shopee will continue to support the growth of MSMEs in order to be able to compete in the global arena through various innovation developments and programs. We hope that we can become MSME partners to grow in quantity and quality, both locally and globally and domestic products can continue to be in demand and sought after," he explained.

Through the Shopee Export Program, Shopee wants to help more local MSMEs to be able to reach the global market. Until July 2021, various local products are selling well in the international market, with a total daily sales of 50,000 products every day through the Shopee platform. Various programs from upstream to downstream are presented to encourage and support MSMEs to export, ranging from education, training, and online assistance through the Shopee Campus program, as well as the construction of the Shopee MSME Export Campus in Solo, Bandung and Jakarta, as well as the Shopee MSME Campus in Semarang.

BNI's collaboration with Shopee is in line with the development of integrated applications and programs that facilitate exports, namely Xpora. To strengthen this program, BNI has made Xpora an MSME Ecosystem Orchestrator that will bring together domestic MSMEs with potential international buyers. BNI prepares Xpora in 7 cities by maximizing the best locations at BNI branch offices, namely in Jakarta, Solo, Bandung, Denpasar, Surabaya, Medan, and Makassar.

This collaboration with Shopee will be combined with the strength of the network of branch offices owned by BNI in 6 world financial centers, namely Singapore, Hong Kong, Seoul, Tokyo, New York, and London. Through these branch offices, BNI actively conducts B2B Business Matching to open new business opportunities for SMEs that will export, in order to get buyers directly.

Strengthening the capacity of SMEs, as carried out with Shopee, is one of BNI's business strategies to provide sustainable assistance for SMEs from upstream to downstream. This program is prepared so that SMEs are directly integrated in accessing regional and international markets in accordance with national targets to support the government's efforts to print 500,000 new exporting SMEs by 2030. The program has been started since March 2021 with the support of the Ministry of Trade of the Republic of Indonesia, as well as the Ministry of Cooperatives and Small and Medium Enterprises.
