Pandeglang, Banten, February 13, 2019 --- Families of disaster victims in West Nusa Tenggara, Central Sulawesi and Banten can now utilize 1,150 temporary shelters built by PT Bank Negara Indonesia (BNI), in collaboration with several other state-owned enterprises. One hundred shelters have been prepared for tsunami victims in Pandeglang, Banten, and were inaugurated in Sumberjaya village, Sumur subdistrict, Pandeglang regency, Banten province on Feb. 11, 2019.
All of the temporary shelters built in Palembang were developed as part of the Program of SOEs Present for the Country, which was also participated in by several banks under the Association of State-Owned Banks (Himbara). Present at the inauguration of 100 temporary shelters in the Sumur subdistrict, Pandeglang, were Regent Irna Narulita and the CEO of BNI BSD Jakarta, Henry Panjaitan.
The tsunami in the Sunda Strait in Banten and Lampung provinces occurred on Saturday, Dec. 22, 2018 at 9:27 pm. The cities most impacted by the disaster were Serang and Pandeglang (Banten province), where 355 people died, 675 were injured and 7,469 were displaced. At least 162 houses were heavily damaged, 115 were partly damaged and 209 were slightly damaged. Also affected were public and social facilities, including one library, three madrasas, two Islamic boarding schools, four mosques, four prayer rooms, three roads and nine bridges.
Henry revealed that BNI previously provided Emergency Response Aid in Labuan, Carita and Sumur subdistricts and dispensed basic food, clothing, Trauma Healing Aid, ready-to-eat food, mats and blankets. Joint Health Posts were also established to give free health and medical examinations in Labuan and Sumur subdistricts (Kertamukti village). BNI also established a public kitchen on Dec. 23, 2018 until Jan. 13, 2019 in Cikedal district. On that occasion, the construction of 100 shelters was started in Sumur subdistrict (80 in Sumberjaya village and 20 in Tunggaljaya village).
The inauguration was a series of realization processes in one of BNI's missions in raising awareness of and responsibility toward the environment and the community. The existence of shelters will also support the needs of disaster victims to obtain proper housing.
The construction of shelters in Sumur, Pandeglang adds to the record of similar buildings constructed by BNI in various disaster-stricken areas in Indonesia. Prior to this, BNI and several other SOEs implemented the construction of 700 shelters for earthquake victims in West Nusa Tenggara. BNI also built 350 other shelters in Central Sulawesi for the victims of the earthquake and land liquefaction in Sigi regency.
